What to eat and drink: Lots of cakes, lots of coffee (coffee tradition is really strong due to the Turkish invasions in 1683 and 1729). Wiener Schnitzel, Sachtertorte (famous chocolate cake), Gulasch, Palatschinken (pancakes), Fritattensuppe (soup with pancakes), geroestete Knoedel (bread-dumplings roasted with egg), Schinkenfleckerl (pasta with ham), Tafelspitz (cooked beef), Eierschwammerl mit Knoedel, Steinpilze mit Knoedel (canterells or mushrooms with dumplings), Kaiserschmarrn (pancaky kind of mix with raisons, best with plum sauce), Marillenknoedel (sweet dumplings with apricots), Powidltascherl (sweet flat dumplings filled with malty plum jam) To sum up: the Austrian kitchen is great!! Recently also more accessible for vegetarians. Partly mighty. Lots of Eastern European influences (although many Austrians will make you believe Gulasch is Austrian rather than Hungarian...)

Cost of living examples:

  • A Beer: €3.07 PRICE PINT - however, Austria has a very strong wine-drinking tradition. So rather go for some nice Gruener Veltliner or St.Laurent. In the past decade, Austria has become more and more well known for its excellent wines. Do NOT mention the Glycol-scandal to Austrians. We are bored of it. And it's ages ago.
  • A Cappuccino: A Cappuccino (called 'Melange' in Austria: €3.5 The price depends on the cafe really.. this is an estimated Viennese price.
  • A litre of milk: € ???
  • Renting a 2 bedrooms apartment in an average town: Depends on the size, you should be able to find something around € 350 (1 room) to € 500. For a long time, Vienna was well known for its relatively low rents compared to the rest of Europe, but that has changed in the past years.
